Works collaboratively with peers to achieve department goals and organizations vision. • Conforms to standard procedures and methods used to store, distribute items and instrumentation within the applicable Federal, State and other regulatory agencies including JCAHO • Follows SUMC Safety and Infection Prevention policy and guidelines for self, patients, visitors and employees • Participates in and complies with departmental and institutional regulatory requirements, policy and procedure pertaining to; quality control, quality assurance and preventive maintenance. Actively participates in quality improvement issues with appropriate monitoring and documentation. • Maintains patient confidentiality. • Assures the prudent use of resources and efficiently maintains inventory. • Prepares assigned shift work report of activity and apprises Lead Technician of issues and needs. • Manages information utilizing appropriate manual or electronic systems for shift work activity. Job Summary: Under the direct supervision of the Para technical Supervisor or the Section Supervisor is responsible for accessioning, receiving and specimen processing, answering phones, faxing results upon request and report distribution. Assists in the training of new employees and/or students as needed. Completes assignments with accuracy and in a timely manner without comprising the quality of the patient sample. Exercises good judgment in recognizing and correcting irregularities and/or unusual requests. Performs other miscellaneous duties or special projects as assigned. Complies with all aspects of the job according to written procedure. Essential Duties and Job Functions (All Areas). Answers telephones, responds to inquiries regarding status of testing, giving out results, transferring calls as necessary, answering all inquires in a polite and efficient manner. Accurately taking results from Reference labs. Print reports and faxes; send via US mail or interdepartmental mail as requested. Receives samples via the pneumatic system, couriers, patients, or other hospital personnel. Deals with patient's samples in an appropriate and efficient manner, distributing to the appropriate area of the laboratory or routing to other hospital departments as necessary according to procedure. Accessions patient information accurately into Laboratory computer system. Checks all requests for proper and accurate patient information. Consults with Supervisor, Lead or Technologist when unclear or unusual requests received. Notifies physicians, nursing units, clinics etc. when sample received is either inappropriate for testing or otherwise compromised. Independently resolves problems encountered in routine work. Recognizes problems or requests which require Supervisor and/or Technologist assistance when appropriate. After processing of samples is complete distributes accordingly, ensuring that samples are routed to appropriate areas in the laboratory. Distributes STAT requests in a timely as well as appropriate manner. Keeps work areas well stocked with necessary supplies and notifies appropriate personnel when inventory levels are low. Must keep all work areas clean and dispose of all waste appropriately. Keeps current with all laboratory procedures, techniques and changes in all areas of the laboratory through which he or she rotates. Follows all departmental policies regarding attendance, punctuality and health and safety. Communicates with physicians, nurses, visitors and other laboratory! Hospital staff in a cooperative and courteous manner. Responds to their needs appropriately with minimal waiting time. II) Understands patient care and laboratory priorities and independently assists others to ensure efficient workflow. Report promptly to Supervisor or Lead any abnormal circumstances with equipment, machinery or other problems that may exist in a prompt manner. Maintains all logs, records and data etc. in a legible and precise manner. Assists with media preparation, reagent preparations, and glassware preparation when requested. Provides orientation and training to Lab Assistants. Orients new employees to general procedures in the lab; trains them in the performance of nontechnical duties. Performs other duties as assigned. Microbiology Neurology (In addition to Essential duties and Job Functions). Sets up cultures according to specimen type using aseptic technique, including routine cultures, fungus cultures, and anaerobic cultures, legion Ella cultures, viral cultures, direct viral exams and shell vials. Accessions into multiple computer systems, Sunquest (SHC) and Meditech (LPCH) efficiently and accurately. Concentrates specimens by centrifugation and separates blood cells from serum. Calls worksheets and pulls serums for assay runs. Refeeds viral cultures and shell vials as required. Performs subcultures of blood culture samples (as needed) and matches samples and slips before discarding five day old blood samples. Prepares and stains slides for direct viral exams, gram stains, shell vials and cytospinning when required. Screens all cell culture tubes and shell vials for contaminating viruses or toxicity before inoculating with patient samples. Screen all Micro culture media for contamination before inoculating with patient samples. Must be able to rotate through areas of the laboratory including Accessioning, Micro culture setups, Virology culture setups, and spin/aliquot and answering phones. Cleans hoods, incubators, counters and refrigerators as required. Performs preventive maintenance as needed or required. Hematology Laboratory an addition to essential duties and job functions retrieve specimens from the accessioning area for both LPCR and SUR patients. Sort specimens according to priority and test area and deliver specimens as needed. Prepare slides, dilute phase platelet counts and set up ESR testing. Receive phone requests for results and call STAT results when necessary. Inventory supplies as needed. Centrifuge and process and preserve specimens for routine and special coagulation tests. Perform the duties of the lab assistant for the special coagulation laboratory to cover breaks and vacations. Perform weekly QC on glassware, DI water and Mettler Balance including monthly QC on Mettler. Check refrigerators and freezers temperature every morning. Set up controls for ESR and QC new lot numbers. Perform filing of slides, specimens and paperwork. Preanalytical - Clinical Laboratory: Addition to Essential Duties and Job Functions. Prepares and packages samples for sending out to appropriate reference labs, ensuring that all paperwork has been properly filled out and is accurate and legible. Centrifuges, aliquots, plates specimens to media, or otherwise processes specimens to assure testing can be performed in a timely and appropriate manner. Utilizes Age-specific competencies and techniques in dealing with children that are appropriate for their level of development and conveys concern for patient. Must be able to rotate through all areas of department as required including, specimen receiving, microbiology, billing, answering phones, accessioning, and spin/aliquot. Must be able to rotate through all areas of department as required including, specimen receiving, front desk, accessioning, specimen processing (spin/aliquot), phlebotomy and ED coordinator. Maintains inventory of supplies and keeps area of laboratory stocked as required. Responsible for keeping nursing units stocked with phlebotomy supplies. Tallies work in accordance with department instructions. Must be done in a legible manner. Provides backup coverage for Outreach locations as needed. Monitors worksheets and leftover lists. Qualifications (All Areas) High School graduate or equivalent. Knowledge of various nontechnical needs of a laboratory, usually acquired from a combination of previous work experience and/or schooling. Ability to establish good working relationships with a variety of professional, technical and nontechnical staff required. Strong interpersonal and organizational skills required. The ability to communicate fluently in English, both orally and in writing is required. One to two years-previous laboratory experience preferred. Qualifications (micro/Viro). One to two years-previous laboratory experience in Microbiology and or Virology preferred. Knowledge of aseptic technique and other lab techniques required. Qualifications Hematology Receiving: Knowledge of general hematology lab preferred.
