Protection & Control Engineer

Our company is hiring for a full time Protection &Control Engineer Job in (Atlanta, Georgia) with a Fortune 100 company for one of the top public power supply companies in the world. You will have an opportunity to work collaboratively with talented professionals who deliver integrated solutions and continue to raise the bar in electrical innovation. Our organization is large enough to be entrepreneurial and growth oriented, and still be large enough to be recognized as a premier provider of Transmission & Distribution relay and control panels, equipment enclosures, and protection & control design services. Here are some of the job responsibilities that the Protection & Control Engineer will provide: New Relay Settings: New settings can range in complexity from a new fused transformer, to a new substation, to generator installations, to capacitor bank protection, to transmission line panels with carrier. Where microprocessor based relays are involved, more time is needed for the many settings involved which dictate the communications and control logic as well as the protection settings themselves. Where new schemes are developed, more time is needed for the development, drafting, checking and testing prior to use. The following is a brief summary of the steps normally involved with a new or modified substation: Prepare or make modifications/corrections to Single Line Metering and Relaying Diagram. Review and make modifications/corrections to Relay Panel and Equipment drawings. Perform impedance, short circuit, and settings calculations utilizingCAPE, MathCAD and/or Excel. Model the system under study and develop settings with proper coordination utilizingCAPEshort circuit software. Prepare relay sheets for field implementation and testing. Prepare microprocessor based setting files for each relay involved and save in a medium suitable for field implementation and future reference. Prepare logic diagrams for insertion into AutoCAD drawings. Check new settings. Test new control panels at relay manufacturer’s site if practical. Provide technical support/make modifications during commissioning. File final field changes to relay sheets in permanent electronic and hard copy file. File previous versions in relay hard copy folders along with transformer nameplate and test data, capacitor technical data, related correspondence, settings calculations, and backup for assumptions made. Requested Relay changes: Many times during the year, a project by GTC or GPC may require changes at a MEAG Transmission S/S. This work may be performed by test engineers or we will request GPC to do the work. In either case we will check the setting changes for reasonableness and coordinate the changes needed, updating our records as well as passing this on to GPC since they are the system operator. If the work is more extensive and requires a panel replacement, we may do the work in house or send a WAR request to the appropriate party to perform this work. Relay setting changes are also requested for distribution S/Ss by our cities, GPC, and GTC. These changes are evaluated against the transformer protection, and implemented if acceptable. Relay Testing: Relay setting sheets are sent out and received back from GPC and our other contractors on a continuing basis. Each time that a relay is tested, it is recorded on the relay setting sheet and filed. Test values are checked for reasonableness and setting sheets re-issued accordingly. UF Tripping: A spreadsheet of UF relays and their settings is maintained by Operations. Each year these UF Trip locations and settings are re-evaluated for compliance with SERC and NERC requirements. All changes to these locations and settings are made through the relay setting sheet process to show when and by whom these relays were tested or changed. If new projects are needed, Protection & Control has initiated and managed these new projects to completion. Impedance Information Requests: Everyone in the ITS has a need for impedance data that may be owned by another member of the ITS along with the various consultants. Gathering or developing this data can take some time, but is a necessary function in this reciprocal relationship. Review Protective Relay Misoperations: Review morning report to verify proper operation of breakers. Using Comtrade available software, determine the sequence of events and whether relays operated correctly during a misoperation or suspected misoperation. ITS Relay Working Group: This is a standing working group reporting to the JSOP. This work group performs analysis requested by the JSOP and makes recommendations as necessary to the JSOP. ITS FIDVR Working Group: This is a working group reporting to JSOP. The working group is studying the effects of the recovery of the system voltage after a fault. SERC PCS Work Group: This is a standing subcommittee reporting to the EC of SERC. This includes relay system testing and maintenance, Disturbance Monitoring Equipment for fault and long term disturbance monitoring, Transmission Misoperations review and analysis, survey responses to NERC, etc. Assignments will be made at each meeting to be completed before the next meeting. Opted not to participate in actual compliance audits which is another function performed by members of this group. SCADA Standards Development: We have been working with ETS, Construction, and Operations to develop standards for SCADA Point development and resulting standard descriptions for monitoring and responding to alarms. Maintain Impedance Models: Update and maintain impedance models of the Cities and the ITS for fault current studies and setting determinations. This requires calculation of transmission line impedances, distribution line impedances, transformer impedances, etc. as needed for analysis of fault currents and setting parameters. Initiate projects for replacement of overstressed breakers as determined by these studies and other studies performed annually by GPC. Also verify other studies performed by GPC or GTC before expenditures are made. Relay Panel Standards: Develop and maintain relay panel standards for the different types of relay panels used. Evaluate new relays for use in different applications. Firmware Upgrades: Install firmware upgrades as need and as recommended by the manufacturer to avoid misoperations or enhance capabilities. Communications: Develop methods of reliable communications from microprocessor relays/devices to SCADA via DNP Protocol or from microprocessor relays/devices back to the office for event recording analysis or status changes, etc. Maintain these paths thru firmware or software upgrades. Technical Support: Provide technical support and recommendations to our cities and other departments as needed. Assist during outages.

Requested Relay changes: Many times during the year, a project by GTC or GPC may require changes at the company’s Transmission S/S. This work may be performed by client test engineers or we will request GPC to do the work.
